IMPORTANCE OF REQUESTING SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ON CONSULAR FORM DS 230 PART II

Zhao Reader Asks:

I immigrated to U.S. in April of this year. At the port of entry, I requested for a social security number, but as of now, I have not received it. Do I have to request for it again? Where to apply and what form to fill out?

Dear reader:

The last form that you were asked to fill out for consular processing, DS 230 part II, asked in question 33A whether you had ever applied for a Social Security number and whether you wished the Social Security Administration to assign you a Social Security number. On question 33B, you were asked to authorize disclosure of information from the DS 230 part II to a number of agencies including the Social Security Administration. If your answer to these questions were "yes", a Social Security number should have been automatically assigned to you. In that case, you should check with the Social Security Administration office in your area to determine why you have not yet received the card. If your answers to those questions were "no", your request for a Social Security number at the airport might not be a sufficient red flag for the government to issue a number automatically. In that event, you would make an application for the card at the Social Security Administration office that you visit.
